Scuba Diving in the Mediterranean Sea

 

Incredible day diving off the beach in Cala di Fico, Corsica. This was my first time scuba diving in Corsica and I was amazed to find that the Mediterranean Sea holds treasures at every turn.

Cala di Fico is a beautiful private beach north of Ajaccio. I took this tour with Appietto Incentive and the owner Alain showed me around the cove. He owns a beautiful land here where he offers amazing meals and a unique and private stay. This place is far off the beaten path and you can only access with private roads and a 4x4 which is how this beautiful beach has stayed so wild and the water pristine.

Because of the nature of tourism hot spots like Corsica, it is critical to respect private beaches such as these and to protect the few coastal regions left wild. This region in particular protects and homes various species of animals from both land and sea. It is crucial for the environment to always avoid pollution, and by ensuing a guided tour with this company, you can be certain to experience all that there is to offer while being respectful of the land.

Alain is a dive master and also an expert in marine wildlife. It was such a privilege to have him show me around and point out the sea life. During our dive we swam by acres of sea grass (posidonia) blanketing the ocean floor. We saw sea anemone’s, starfish, orange sponges, multi coloured algae, various species of fish, and even an eel.

A perfect way to end any adventure would be with great food and good company. Alain prepared for us a feast of local seafood, some of which I had never tried before. My favorite surprise was the orziadas, which is fried snakelocks anenome. To be honest, I wasn’t really expecting to like it but after tasting, they were devoured quickly. We then had calamari, marinated razor clams, and finally giant prawns with spaghetti.

The bounty of wildlife and resources on and surrounding this island is astounding. The Mediterranean is a truly special place, as is this incredible cove and Alain’s unique and authentic Corsican experience.
